Stem Cell Transplantation Programs

stem cell transplant

Stem Cell Transplantation Programs are offered for the following two conditions:

  • Leukemia
  • Multiple Myeloma (MM)

Cuba offers one of two types of stem cell (bone marrow) transplantation:

  • Autologous stem cell transplants (stem cells from patient)
  • Allogeneic stem cell transplants (stem cells from donor).

Each stem cell program involves the following two phases:

  • Autologous stem cell transplants (stem cells from patient)
  • Allogeneic stem cell transplants (stem cells from donor)

AUTOLOGOUS STEM CELL TRANSPLANTS (STEM CELLS FROM PATIENT)

First Phase:

For this form of stem cell transplant, patient’s own blood-forming stem cells are collected followed with treatment with high doses of chemotherapy, or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation. The goal of this high-dose treatment is not only to kill cancer cells, but to also eliminates the blood producing cells that are left in the bone marrow.

This phase is comprehensive medical assessment as well as an evaluation of the patient’s condition. This phase requires 15 days of hospitalization and would include:

  • Extensive hematological and diagnostic tests
  • Hematologic
  • Immunological
  • Cytogenetic
  • Molecular
  • Microbiological

Included in the program are the following:

  1. The above-mentioned evaluations;
  2. 24/7 nursing staff;
  3. 15 days of hospitalization;

Second Phase:

The second phase of the procedure is implementation of the transplantation which is 40 days of hospitalization and will include:

  • Stem cells are removed, or harvested
  • Possible purging (killing) of remaining cancer cells
  • Stem cell transplantation
  • In vivo purging anti cancer medication given after transplant to clean any remaining cancer cells.

Included in the program are the following:

  1. The above-mentioned treatment;
  2. 24/7 nursing staff;
  3. 40 days of hospitalization;

ALLOGENEIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANTS (STEM CELLS FROM DONOR)

First Phase:

For this type of transplant, stem cells are collected from a matching donor and transplanted into to suppress the disease and restore your mother’s immune system.

Allogeneic stem cell transplant is also made of two phases whereby the first phase in which a comprehensive medical assessment is performed as well as an evaluation of patient’s condition.

This phase requires 15 days of hospitalization and would include:

  • Extensive hematological and diagnostic tests
  • Hematologic
  • Immunological
  • Cytogenetic
  • Molecular
  • Microbiological (for patient and donor)
  • Study of histocompatibility between patient and donor

The program also includes:

  1. The above mentioned evaluations;
  2. 15 days of hospitalization;
  3. 24/7 nursing staff;
  4. Evaluation of the donor:
  5. Initial evaluation and preparation
  6. Extensive hematological and diagnostic tests

Second Phase:

The second phase of the procedure is implementation of the transplantation which is 40 days of hospitalization and will include:

  • Stem cells are removed, or harvested
  • Possible purging (killing) of remaining cancer cells
  • Stem cell transplantation
  • In vivo purging anti cancer medication given after transplant to clean any remaining cancer cells

Included in the program are the following:

  1. Hospitalization in private (in isolation) room,
  2. The transplantation procedure,
  3. Medicaments for the procedure;
  4. 24/7 nursing staff;

Due to the complicity in determining with any certainty as to whether a stem cell transplant would be evaluated as the most suitable and beneficial form of treatment mainly due to the current condition, in regards to progression, of the cancercomplex nature of such treatment.
