WHEN HOME SAYS NO: SAFE, LEGAL ABORTION IN CUBA FOR U.S. WOMEN IN CRISIS

June 29, 2025by Wael Gharbiyeh0

In recent years, we’ve witnessed an alarming rollback of reproductive rights across the United States. With over a dozen states enforcing near-total abortion bans or imposing restrictive hurdles, young women, survivors of sexual violence, patients with non-viable pregnancies, and even those facing serious health risks are being pushed into dangerous and dehumanizing situations. This is not just a legal matter. It is a public health crisis.

Let me be clear. What is happening across many U.S. states is the systematic erosion of a fundamental human right: the right to bodily autonomy and access to safe, science-based medical care.

A Dangerous Landscape for American Women and Girls

The consequences of criminalizing abortion are not theoretical. They are immediate and devastating. A 2023 study published in JAMA confirmed what many already feared: maternal mortality rates are rising fastest in states where abortion has been restricted or banned. This includes states like Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Denied or delayed access to medically necessary care has led to ruptured ectopic pregnancies, preventable infections, long-term infertility, and in some cases, death. Black and brown women, along with low-income women in rural areas, bear the brunt of these outcomes.

At the same time, legal threats are growing. Some women have been criminalized for managing their miscarriages at home. Others have had their treatment plans blocked by lawyers in hospitals. In these environments, doctors are silenced by fear, and patients are left without answers. This is not healthcare. This is state-controlled suffering.

Cuba: A Global Example in Reproductive Health

By contrast, the Republic of Cuba stands as one of the most progressive countries in the Western Hemisphere when it comes to women’s reproductive health. Since 1965, abortion has been legal, publicly available, and safely performed in regulated medical facilities across the island.

This isn’t driven by ideology. It is based on public health ethics, scientific evidence, and human dignity. Women in Cuba have full legal autonomy over their reproductive decisions. Procedures are carried out in sanitary, hospital-based environments by qualified specialists.

As the Guttmacher Institute has noted, Cuba’s abortion services represent a rare model of how reproductive healthcare can be fully integrated into a national public health system. The World Health Organization also recognizes Cuba for its exceptional maternal care and low mortality rates.

And unlike in the United States, Cuban law supports this care as a right—not a privilege, not a political football, and not a religious debate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is abortion legal and safe in Cuba?
Yes. Abortion has been legal and widely accessible in Cuba for over 50 years. All procedures are performed in state hospitals under full medical supervision.

Will my information be reported to the U.S.?
No. All communications and records are encrypted and confidential. Nothing is shared with any U.S. agency, employer, insurer, or immigration authority.

What does the cost include?
The fee, determined by the Republic of Cuba, includes the procedure, hospital fees, aftercare, private accommodation, meals, airport transfers, and bilingual medical coordination. There are no hidden charges.

Can I travel to Cuba alone for this?
Yes. Most patients travel independently, though we can assist with arrangements for a trusted companion if preferred. Our team provides guidance on flights, visas, and local support.

Can I speak to someone before applying?
Absolutely. You can contact our Women’s Health Coordinator to ask questions and understand the process before making any decisions. We offer full clarity and full privacy.

What is the gestational limit?
The Republic of Cuba offers termination of pregnancy up to 20 months, evaluated individually by qualified Cuban medical specialists. Cases are reviewed based on medical reports and assessments.

What if I’m from Texas, Alabama, or another restricted state?
It is not illegal to leave your state or country for abortion care. Your constitutional right to travel remains protected. Local ordinances in places like Texas may attempt to intimidate patients, but they do not override your federal rights. Our services help you leave quietly and return safely.
