The Research Center in Longevity, Ageing, and Health (CITED) was founded on May 7th, 1992, with the blessing of Fidel Castro Ruz. Today, it holds the status of a National Reference Center for the Development of Gerontology and Geriatrics specialties, as well as for research in the areas of Longevity, Aging, and Health in the Elderly.
This clinic is a leader in the training of human resources devoted to the care of elderly people. CITED, as a specialized center, is responsible for the introduction, development, validation, and generalization of clinical, surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic technologies in Gerontology and Geriatrics.
CITED monitors the aging process and the increase in life expectancy, together with projections and needs of the Cuban population, generating information for the Ministry of Public Health to improve decision-making.
The development of geriatric surgery, with an emphasis on high-risk elderly, is among the strategic objectives. The intention is the use of advanced surgical techniques with functional recovery in surgical procedures such as restorative surgery in disabling diseases (surgical repair of urinary incontinence, knee disorders), minimally invasive surgery, and the use of stem cells in degenerative joint, arterial, and bone diseases.
CITED has a diagnostic department where several complementary tests can be performed, supporting not only the clinical diagnosis but also strengthening institutional and multi-center research.
The WHO acknowledges and collaborates with the center in the following two aspects:
